Durability Test: Fold 8 Ultra Fails Under Reverse Pressure

JerryRigEverything put Samsung's flagship foldable through extreme scratch and bend testing. The inner screen remains prone to fingernail dents, and aggressive reverse flexing snaps the chassis entirely.

Spending two thousand dollars on a smartphone only to flinch every time a fingernail grazes the screen is a dubious pleasure. Foldables get thinner every year, but marketers have yet to outsmart the laws of physics. JerryRigEverything's Zack Nelson put the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra through his signature torture test, and the results clearly show the compromises you pay for out of pocket.

Outer Armor and Fragile Plastic Inside

The exterior display is protected by Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3, and there are no surprises here: it behaves just like conventional flagship glass. Scratches only start showing up at level 6 on the Mohs hardness scale, with deeper grooves at level 7. Keys and loose coins in your pocket pose no threat to the outer panel, though the aluminum frame is easily shaved with a standard utility blade.

Here is what happens in plain terms once you unfold the device: a flexible OLED panel physically cannot be covered with thick tempered glass because of the hinge crease. As a result, the inner display picks up noticeable dents at just level 2 hardness.

In practice, the inner screen can be scratched even with fingernails, which demands extra caution during daily use.

Press too hard during fast typing or close the halves with debris inside, and you will leave a permanent mark. You will have to baby the internal panel constantly.

Sand in the Hinge and the Bend Test

Samsung does not hide these vulnerabilities: on first boot, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra explicitly warns owners about limited dust and sand resistance. Nelson gave the device an improvised beach test, dumping a generous handful of sand over the mechanism. Fine particles immediately penetrated the hinge, creating an unpleasant crunching noise with every fold, though the mechanism kept working and proved more resilient than the recent Pixel 11 Pro Fold.

The brute-force bend test proved fatal. The foldable chassis survived the first extreme reverse-bend attempt, showing impressive overall rigidity. On the second try, however, Nelson snapped the frame, completely destroying the flexible display. The mechanics are simple: an ultra-thin complex hinge cannot tolerate severe lateral stress and flexing, and an out-of-warranty repair for this panel will cost as much as a solid standalone smartphone.

This is an expensive status symbol that demands careful handling and extended insurance. Spending $2,000 on an ultra-slim foldable flagship buys a futuristic form factor at the cost of a fragile plastic screen. If you are not ready to baby the device and tolerate grit in the hinge, sticking with a traditional glass-slab flagship remains the smarter move.
