A 2.6-gram motor gives the Honor Robot Phone a built-in mechanical gimbal

Honor engineered a functional three-axis motorized stabilizer directly into the rear chassis of its new experimental flagship. While mechanical horizon leveling delivers remarkably smooth footage, manual deployment and fragile moving parts limit its daily practicality.

Carrying a separate motorized gimbal or a dedicated action camera just to record smooth video is a constant hassle for mobile creators. You either clutter your bag with extra cables and mounts or put up with shaky handheld walking footage. Honor set out to solve this radically: its engineers embedded a mechanical three-axis stabilizer directly into the body of the Honor Robot Phone. On paper, the concept sounds wild, but the working device exists and actually functions.

A miniature mechanical arm behind a 6.31-inch screen

Instead of clamping the phone into an external gimbal, the Honor Robot Phone conceals a folding motorized arm inside a small compartment on its rear panel. To activate it, you slide open a plastic cover manually and trigger the launch button inside the camera app or via the built-in Yoyo voice assistant. The 6.31-inch screen displays a stylized X-ray animation while the mechanical arm extends and brings the primary sensor out.

Honor claims it engineered a custom motor weighing just 2.6 grams to claim the title of the world's most compact stabilizer. However, packing mechanical drives and rotating joints inside the chassis inevitably impacted overall dimensions: the handset measures 9.6 mm thick, excluding the raised camera island.

Because of that profile, the handset feels noticeably bulkier than standard slim flagships. In return, you get a full-sized touchscreen for framing and adjustments, eliminating the need to squint at tiny action camera screens or struggle with fiddly mechanical joysticks.

Capturing smooth video

The primary shooter mounted on the mechanical arm features a 200 MP sensor with an f/1.6 aperture and standard optical image stabilization when folded. The super stabilization mode locks the horizon reliably even during running and jumping, avoiding the typical cropping artifacts and micro-jitter seen in purely digital stabilization.

The smartphone tracks subjects automatically and offers pre-programmed movements, such as a 180-degree pan. The rest of the camera setup looks just as capable: a 200 MP telephoto lens with OIS and 2.7x optical zoom, a 50 MP ultra-wide sensor with a 122-degree field of view, and a 50 MP selfie camera. Thanks to the motorized arm's rotating design, you can flip the main 200 MP shooter toward yourself, echoing older swivel concepts like the Galaxy A80.

Daily compromises

A mechanical gimbal introduces friction that software-stabilized phones never suffer from. Sliding open the protective shutter manually before each shot makes spontaneous recording virtually impossible: quick snaps turn into a deliberate, multi-step process.

Software limitations outside China make an import even harder to justify. Most features tied to the Yoyo AI assistant rely on local Chinese services, leaving global users with just the basic camera app. Furthermore, delicate moving joints and open compartments collect pocket lint and are vulnerable to drops—risks standard slab phones avoid entirely.

Key takeaways

The Honor Robot Phone is an inventive engineering experiment, but buying one as a daily driver makes little sense. For Honor, it represents a niche domestic showcase akin to concept foldables from rival brands. Paying a premium to import an experimental device with locked AI features and fragile moving parts is impractical: pairing a standard flagship with a standalone gimbal is cheaper, more versatile, and far more durable.
