Former DJI engineers at FarseerTech are trying to fix that exact annoyance with the RocXZoom, a robotic extreme zoom camera that packs an enormous 40mm–2000mm equivalent reach into a handheld form factor. The hardware combines a 20x optical zoom with a 50x hybrid zoom, using an integrated motorized gimbal and electronic image stabilization to kill the shakes that normally ruin extreme distance shots.
At long focal lengths, even a slight twitch or your own breathing turns an image into a shaky mess. FarseerTech leans directly on its creators' drone pedigree to keep distant targets locked dead center.

The Trade-Offs Behind the Crowdfunding Craze
Backyard observers clearly want this kind of hands-off nature watching. According to TechRadar, citing PetaPixel, the RocXZoom Kickstarter campaign smashed past its funding goal by more than 25 times thanks to 350 backers, with early bird pricing starting at $499 (about £370 or AU$700) ahead of its September 28 deadline. The gadget already made an appearance at CES 2026, which gives the underlying hardware real-world credibility over typical vaporware.
There is, however, an unavoidable hardware compromise. To keep the device compact and hit that wild 50x magnification, FarseerTech used a modest 1/2.5-inch sensor paired with an f/1.8 to f/3.9 lens aperture. That small sensor means you will not get the creamy low-light performance or pristine detail of a dedicated mirrorless camera, and backing crowdfunding always carries the usual risks of shipping delays or altered specs before delivery.
Yet for suburban homeowners and amateur birders tired of lugging heavy glass, the convenience factor easily outweighs the optical limits. If FarseerTech delivers the stabilized tracking demonstrated on the show floor, the $499 RocXZoom will carve out a compelling new niche for effortless backyard observation.
