The company has introduced the Xring O3, its second custom-designed mobile processor, built to cut down its total reliance on Qualcomm and MediaTek. Instead of paying hefty third-party licensing fees and waiting around for supplier roadmaps, Xiaomi wants direct control over how computing, graphics, on-device artificial intelligence, and camera processing cooperate under the chassis. As Murali Teja reported, the company contracted TSMC to fabricate the Xring O3 on a 3-nanometer manufacturing process—a dense architecture explicitly chosen to keep thermal throttling in check while stretching battery life.
The Real Guinea Pig
Do not expect to see this silicon inside budget handsets anytime soon. Xiaomi plans to debut the Xring O3 exclusively inside its next flagship foldable phone, capping initial volume between 200,000 and 300,000 units. Foldable devices are notorious for cramped thermal envelopes and aggressive battery drain, making them the toughest stress test for custom hardware before wider deployment.
Building its own processor gives Xiaomi more say over how a phone's computing, graphics, AI, and camera systems work together.
This calculated rollout treats early adopters as a hands-on proving ground. By tuning proprietary firmware directly to bespoke silicon, Xiaomi aims to deliver cooler everyday operation, smoother UI responsiveness, and tighter local AI execution without passing supplier markups straight onto your receipt.
A Multi-Billion-Dollar Ecosystem
This mobile silicon launch is only one front of a wider hardware push. Beyond consumer handsets, Xiaomi is developing the Xring O100 processor for its MiMo AI model, alongside the Xring D100 platform tailored for self-driving automotive systems. Backing this silicon roadmap is a dedicated unit of over 3,000 engineers and a budget topping 20 billion yuan (roughly $2.8 billion), signaling that Xiaomi would rather spend billions engineering custom silicon than remain at the mercy of merchant chipmakers.
