Xbox tests disc binding to turn physical games into digital licenses

Microsoft is experimenting with a system that lets Xbox owners convert physical discs into permanent digital licenses after a single drive read. The move unlocks cloud streaming and PC cross-play without swapping discs, though it could effectively dismantle the second-hand game market if discs are locked permanently.

Thousands of plastic game cases on living room shelves might soon become purely decorative. Microsoft is finally testing a way to spare console owners the constant whirring of disc drives: a mechanism to directly bind physical game discs to a digital user account. The process is straightforward: insert the disc once, the console registers a permanent digital license to your profile, and the plastic case can go back into the closet. From then on, the game launches straight from storage.

The main practical perk is seamless access to Microsoft's ecosystem. Digitized releases for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S automatically gain support for cloud gaming and Play Anywhere features, letting you pick up progress on PC without buying a second copy. However, backwards-compatible classics from the Xbox 360 and original Xbox eras appear to be excluded for now, with no mention in early documentation. A public release date has not been announced, as initial testing will roll out through the Xbox Insider program.

Yet this convenience raises significant questions for the second-hand market. Microsoft has not clarified what happens to the physical medium once activated: whether the disc becomes a useless plastic token for other users or retains its functionality for resale. If the system permanently burns the disc's secondary value, used game trading could effectively be phased out under the banner of everyday convenience.
