Dutch manufacturer Fairphone is pitching a stark alternative as it lands in the US with the Fairphone Gen 6+, priced at $650. The value proposition sounds compelling on paper: instead of paying repair shop ransoms or tossing out a phone when the USB port wears out, you get modular hardware assembled with standard screws.

Screws Over Glue

Cracking open the Gen 6+ requires zero heat guns, suction cups, or delicate guitar picks. A standard screwdriver gets you past the chassis into modular sub-assemblies in under two minutes.

“Our goal is that every single person that purchases a Fairphone uses it for at least five years, and we track that as a KPI [Key Performance Indicator],” said Hatton.

Fairphone treats product longevity as a core metric, betting that swappable components will curb e-waste. That modularity lets owners replace the 6.31-inch OLED screen or drop in a fresh battery without risking delicate ribbon cables or destroying water seals.

The Engineering Bill

Modularity carries an immediate tax in hand feel and raw horsepower. Making every subsystem individually addressable forces thick bezels, a noticeably chunky plastic frame, and compromises on ingress protection. You are paying sub-flagship money for mid-range silicon, essentially accepting a bulkier pocket profile and modest performance in exchange for the moral and financial freedom of DIY maintenance.

The real math comes down to ownership economics. If replacement batteries and displays remain affordably stocked for five years, self-repair pays off; if you upgrade every two years anyway, you are simply paying $650 for a heavier device with slower silicon.
