Camera-Free Ray-Ban Meta Audio: $349 Glasses Drop Lenses to Bypass Public Bans

Meta is splitting its smart eyewear line by launching the $349 camera-free Ray-Ban Meta Audio on October 13, weighing just 43 grams to dodge public recording bans. Alongside them, the company previewed the Meta VR Glasses, a tethered $1,299 headset arriving in spring 2027.

Meta has expanded its wearable lineup at Meta Connect 2026 by splitting the concept of smart eyewear in two. The company introduced the camera-free Ray-Ban Meta Audio alongside a distinct virtual reality headset called Meta VR Glasses. The new audio-only frames drop the optics entirely, shaving the weight down to 43 grams while delivering a stated 12 hours of battery life, stretching to 48 hours with the charging case.

Dropping the camera solves the most persistent friction point facing smart glasses today: nobody wants to be secretly recorded on the commute, and public venues from cafes to corporate offices are outright banning recording devices. By removing the lens, Meta turns a controversial surveillance gadget into a socially acceptable pair of headphones disguised as classic eyewear. Available in 23 color and lens combinations across new Clubmaster and Burbank styles, the Ray-Ban Meta Audio is priced at $349 and hits shelves on October 13.

The Two-Part Computing Split

For those who still want full virtual reality, the company took a radically different hardware route. The Meta VR Glasses rely on a tethered architecture where the display and sensors live in the frames, while a separate pocket-sized puck handles heavy computing, storage, and battery duties. The two communicate via a thin optical cable, allowing the headset to weigh a manageable 100 grams on the face.

The Meta VR Glasses use a two-part system, with the glasses housing the display and sensors, while a connected puck handles the computing and houses the storage and battery.

Visuals are driven by micro-OLED displays delivering 5K resolution at 37 pixels per degree, backed by Dolby Vision and spatial audio firing from the frame temples. Meta has integrated its AI agent directly into the operating system, letting users navigate the interface through eye tracking and hand gestures rather than fumbling with controllers.

Heavy-Class Performance and Pricing

Driven by the new Snapdragon Reality Elite chipset, the Meta VR Glasses target high-end media consumption and remote presence. The battery setup in the puck delivers roughly three hours of untethered runtime before needing a top-up via 45-W fast charging. The hardware carries IMAX Enhanced certification for 3D movies and links directly to Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Meta is also pushing Hologram Calling, a feature that renders a photorealistic 3D avatar of the user with real-time facial expressions during video calls. It is an impressive technical feat, but it comes with a steep entry barrier. The Meta VR Glasses launch in Spring 2027 with a starting price of $1,299 in the US.

Before dropping over a thousand dollars on a tethered VR visor, look at your actual daily routine. If your biggest wearable headache is dodging cafe bans and neck strain, a $349 pair of camera-free audio glasses makes infinitely more practical sense than carrying a computing puck everywhere you go.
